What Role Does Religion Play in Nigeria?

World Have Your Say

Available for over a year

With its 70 million Christians, Nigeria has become fertile ground for different churches. In 2011, Forbes magazine published a list of the country’s richest pastors - the wealthiest among them had an estimated fortune of $150 million dollars. But whilst some have criticised the so-called 'mega-churches' and their millionaire pastors preaching around the globe, others have described them as a pillar of their day-to-day lives. In our last live broadcast from Nigeria this week, we ask what role religion plays in Nigerian society and whether some religious groups have abandoned their spiritual component to become profit-oriented businesses. Our presenter Nuala McGovern will be at a church in Lagos to hear what the faithful and the sceptical have to say. (Photo: A congregation in a 'mega-church'. Credit: Reuters)
