Winshill Water Tower, Burton-upon-Trent: Young Men’s Efforts
World War One At ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½Available for over a year
The Waterloo Tower in Winshill, Burton-upon-Trent is one of the town’s most prominent landmarks. A hundred years ago it was also a very important building providing much of the area with its water. The tower houses a huge tank where water for domestic use is stored after being pumped up from the engine-house to provide a large head of water which, due to gravity, could be supplied at much higher pressure than was available from the district reservoir. Because of fear of invasion and attack by Zeppelins; local scouts patrolled the tower during the war. It’s thought they acted mainly as fire wardens.
