Father who left toddler in car 'incensed' at conviction

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A father who left his two-year-old in the car for five minutes whilst buying Calpol, says he was "incensed" to be convicted of a child abuse offence. Tim Haines (pictured), a family law advocate, was arrested and prosecuted for "wilful exposure of a child to risk of significant harm" He was reported to social services and he and wife Julie spent a year getting the family removed from a register of children considered at risk. Mr Haines appealed the offence, which has since been overturned and they are now campaigning for greater clarity about when children can be left alone. The law does not state what age a child should be left on their own, but it is an offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk. "We were utterly shocked. we were within a hair's breadth of losing our children, Mrs Haines said. This clip is originally from 5 live Daily on 24 November 2014.
