A controversial bill from the Conservative Peer Lord Saatchi to give doctors more flexibility to use innovative medical treatments on terminally ill patients has inched a little closer to passing through the House of Lords. But there were warnings from the fertility expert Lord Winston about patient safety and about damaging unintended consequences. ‘If this bill goes through he may have a number of brain damaged children which could possibly be on his conscience ‘ said Lord Winston. The bill needs one more debate to clear the Lords but is far from guaranteed to get support from MPs. 'We should be calling it the medical anecdote bill, do not give this bill government backing, it would put patients at risk', said Conservative MP Sarah Wollaston.
