A former French minister has paid tribute to Charlie Hebdo editor Stephane Charbonnier, who was killed when gunmen attacked the magazine's offices - leaving 12 dead. Noëlle Lenoir, former French Minister of Foreign Affairs for Europe, said Stephane was a "very gifted" man who "knew he risked his life". The 47-year-old had received death threats in the past and was living under police protection. The satirical magazine had courted controversy in the past and was firebombed a day after it carried a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad. Ms Lenoir said: "He preferred to stand up rather to be on his knees - to be submitted to the threat he received almost every day," she said.
