Equalities minister: Stop gender stereotyping toys

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Telling a boy he cannot play with a doll "sends a very strong message to that boy about what's an appropriate role for him in society" says the government's equalities minister. Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson says gender stereotyping children's toys has "consequences many years down the line" with "fewer girls going into maths and engineering" and "far too few men going into nursing". She said "we have a huge shortage of engineers and if we could get girls taking those subjects at school, that would help the economy greatly". This clip is originally from 5 live Drive on January 13 2015.
