The Cleaning Ladies Campaigning for Work and Dignity

Assignment

Available for over a year

The Greek election is less than two weeks away, with the opposition party, Syriza, maintaining a steady lead in the polls. The radical left party got to that position with a little help from a group of middle-aged cleaning ladies from the Finance Ministry. After the cleaners were laid off in a round of budget cuts, they led a highly visible campaign to get their jobs back - and in doing so became a national symbol of all that is wrong with the country.
