A woman who smoked when pregnant has said that offering £400 of shopping vouchers is "a lot less than the cost of caring for a baby in intensive care". She added that "it seems sad that the incentive of a healthy baby isn't enough" to make women stop smoking but that "anything that helps is surely a great thing". Mel Fallowfield said she "really struggled" to give up smoking and felt "horrendously guilty" that she was unable to do so but that "it's really tough". Researchers writing in the British Medical Journal found the offer of up to four hundred pounds in shopping vouchers make women more than twice as likely to stop smoking.
