The life of Paul Robeson has been the subject of a play at the Buxton Pavillion Arts Centre. As well as being a famous actor and singer, Paul Robeson was a political activist and played a huge role in the civil rights movement in America. However, he became too radical for the establishment and was at one time branded a traitor to his country. When the play first appeared in the United States it received a lot of accolades for its representation of Robeson's life. In this extract ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Derby's Devon Daley speaks to actor Tayo Aluko who plays the part of Paul Robeson and asks why Robeson was such an important campaigner. * The photo shows Paul Robeson making his first television appearance since WWII on a special edition of Picture Page, this edition celebrated the Post Office announcement of the sale of 100,000 television licences. The photo was taken in 1949.
