Liverpool Riverside: How regeneration boosts the local economy

Today

Available for over a year

As part of our coverage of 100 constituencies in the 100 days to the election, Simon Jack visits the Liverpool docks to see how regeneration boosts the local economy. Liverpool's docks have been redeveloped in recent years with the building of a Tate art museum and a shopping centre. The docks have always been an important contributor to Liverpool's economy; "In the 1800s there were more millionaires in Liverpool than in all the other big cities in Britain combined excluding London," says Ian Wray, visiting professor in geography and planning at the University of Liverpool. A new deep water container terminal, Liverpool2, is currently being built and will help bring new business to the area. "To stay in the game, Liverpool must have this new terminal.... it will open the door to the opportunity of a whole range of new ocean going container vessels," added Professor Wray.
