Flushed wet wipes littering British beaches

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

The number of wet wipes littering UK beaches is up 50% in a year, according to the Marine Conservation Society, who picked up 35 wet wipes per kilometre of beach they cleaned. Speaking to 5 live Breakfast, Environment director for Water UK, Sarah Mukherjee said the only three things that should be put down the toilet are "poo, pee and paper". She said wet wipes can be used if they are "disposed of correctly" and kept away from the sewerage system where they can clog up toilets and ultimately end up British beaches. This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Thursday 19 March 2015.
