In 1915, a recruitment march took place across Cornwall. A list of places to visit was drawn up by the Cornwall Parliamentary Recruiting Committee (Truro-Helston Division, the Mining Division Camborne, and the Western or St Ives Division). A band and troops were provided by Military Authorities. Victoria Cross holder of the DCLI; Thomas Edward Rendle helped encourage conscription. The march stopped at almost every town, village and hamlet in the county. The first stop was from the train station at Nancegollan on 14 Monday June, 1915. They marched from here to Godolphin Cross, Ashton, Breage, Porthleven then Helston. On the first day they covered 10.5 miles.
