One in five may be affected by exploding head syndrome

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A new study by a US university suggests that as many as one in five people could be affected by a bizarre condition called exploding head syndrome. It happens when a person is woken up by an abrupt loud noise they soon realise is imaginary. The man behind the study is Dr Brain Sharpless from Washington State University and he describes it as a "hiccup in the brain". But he also insists, "it's really not physically harmful, inspite of its scary name". This clip is originally from Up All Night 7 April 2015.
