Will Sutcliffe’s Story

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Leeds Special

Available for over a year

Will Sutcliffe from Hebden Bridge was am engineer in the RAF during World War Two. Posted out to Iceland, Will celebrated VE Day with colleagues on the airbase. He remembers a joyous atmosphere but most of all the hearty meal they were given. On the menu was soup, roast turkey, sausage, veal, potatoes, peas and a cold beer. It was more than they were used to. Celebrations were short as the war with Japan was still ongoing. Many of Will's peers were re-patriated and then sent out back out to the Far East.
