Yvonne Barker’s Story

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Suffolk Special

Available for over a year

Six-year-old Yvonne Barker was queen for the day in the small village of Middleton near Leiston on the Suffolk coast. Seventy years on she describes it as the highlight of her life. She still sees people locally, including some of her ten attendants, who remind her of the day. The dresses were specially made of crepe paper, of different colours. They had puffed sleeves and, miraculously, made it through the day in one piece. Yvonne says her mum told her VE Day meant an end to the fighting and a return to normal life, but that would still be some time away for those living in the small community of Middleton.
