Joan Loakes (nee Groves) from Silverdale will celebrate her 90th birthday in July. During the war her weekday job was sewing shirts for the Forces at Gibsons, which was on North Sherwood Street in Nottingham. She regularly walked the long distance from the Meadows to North Sherwood Street every day to sew. But then on a Saturday she helped her friend, Mrs Gill (whose husband was away with the RAF) run her corner shop on Wilford Road in Nottingham. When the war was over, Joan married Mrs Gill’s brother Wilfred. Image: Wilfred and Joan Loakes
