Monica and Claire: Taking Things at Face Value

The Listening Project

Available for over a year

Claire (50) and her daughter Monica (23) talk about Monica's facial disfigurement. She was born with a birthmark on her right cheek and eye. She endured dozens of hospital appointments when she was very young whilst doctors established whether the growth was cancerous or likely to obstruct her vision. When it was established that it wasn't going to threaten her health or eyesight, Claire made the decision to reduce the hospital visits to just once a year, up until the point when Monica could make decisions for herself about what she wanted to do about it. Claire is a primary school teacher in Hamilton and lives in Uddingston, just outside Glasgow. Monica lives in Aberdeen, where she's currently studying accountancy. She already has a law degree under her belt. This conversation came to The Listening Project in collaboration with the charity Changing Faces.
