Prisoners of war (Pow) built the road between Hartlepool and Port Clarence during World War One. An eye witness describes them working inside a metal cage and once that section of the route was completed it would then be moved forward. Local people said they felt sorry for the prisoners and gave them food. Little is known of where the PoWs stayed and who they were. Their working conditions would have been very tough because the stretch of road they were working on covers marsh land in an exposed area. Although the road is no longer the main connection between Middlesbrough and Hartlepool, it is still well-used.
