Significant economic benefits to Britain - and 70,000 new jobs over 35 years. Those are the arguments underpinning the recommendation by a British government commission for a controversial third runway at London Heathrow. The commission chairman, Sir Howard Davies, said Heathrow was better suited than its rival Gatwick to provide long-haul flights to new markets. But there's anxiety in the area around Heathrow airport about how life would change with a new runway. To argue the economic claims and counter claims, Fergus Nicoll brought together an opponent of airport expansion, Andrew Simms of the New Economics Foundation, and Baroness Jo Valentine, Chief Executive of the business group, London First.
