Graphene – cut but don’t fold!

Science In Action

Available for over a year

The discovery that graphene, the one atom thick, wonder material behaves like paper, inspired nanotechnologist Professor Paul McEuan and his team to try some ancient Japanese paper-cutting art, kirigami – the result is soft, bendable electronics on the nanoscale. They also tried origami (paper folding) but that didn’t work! (Image credit: graphene, like the paper models, is strong but flexible, and can be stretched or pulled with forces comparable to those exerted by motor proteins © Joe Wilensky/Cornell Chronicle)
