The naturally caffeine rich kola nut was a founding ingredient for one of the most popular drinks in the world, Coca-Cola. The nut is grown in Sierra Leonne's Gola Rainforest, where locals have cultivated and consumed kola for centuries, but barely have they made a penny from it. The nut is no longer used to make the fizzy drink, but local villagers continue to use it as an energy food, a medicine and an important feature of rituals and ceremonies. And recently, after the dust has settled from Sierra Leonne's ten year civil war, the nut has been picked up once again as an ingredient for a new soft drink. In some small way, this renewed Western interest for kola is now helping to rejuvinate Sierra Leonne's rural communities.
