DD1 A Dundee newspaper in the 1920s estimated that 63% of Dundee's adult male population were 'invested' on the battlefields of the Great War. With such great involvement came great loss - especially when the territorial battalion most closely associated with the city - 'Dundee's own' the 4th Black Watch, sustained horrific casualty figures at the battle of Loos in 1915. It's a loss which is memorialised by the lighting of the flame on Dundee's war memorial on Dundee Law every 25th September, but now a new 21st century memorial is also being developed - showing the impact of the battle on the home front. Historian Dr Derek Patrick of Dundee University and computer scientist Dr Iain Donald of Abertay University are developing a project which will show where the soldiers came from and tell some of their stories through an interactive computer map and on-line visualisation.
