Can chewing gum banish earworms?

Health Check

Available for over a year

Chewing gum may help you forget annoying tunes, and possibly intrusive thoughts as well. Tunes which stick in your head are known as earworms. 90% of people say they experience them at least once a week. There might be a very easy way of stopping them – by chewing gum. Phil Beaman, Associate Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of Reading in the UK got some students into the lab and gave half of them gum to chew after making them listen to music.
