The dramatic moments in people's lives when their country has gained independence. Husband and wife Xu Xiaobing and Hou Bo stood side by side to hear Chairman Mao proclaim the people's Republic of China in Beijing in 1949. Abba Eban saw his ambition achieved when the UN General Assembly voted for the partition of Palestine allowing the creation of a Jewish State. The journalist Khushwant Singh travelled to Delhi to hear Jawaharlal Nehru formally announce Indian Independence in 1947, and see the Indian flag replace the Union Jack. When Ghana gained its independence in 1957 John Offeh was a shy young man - he thanks his country's new found liberty for giving him the courage to ask girls to dance. Tara Jaff is a Kurd who was born in Iraq. From her father she's learnt about the history and culture of the Kurds - a people with no nation of their own.
