Retired Naval Officer Don Walsh piloted the deep diving vessel, Bathyscaphe Trieste. On 23 January, 1960, he travelled 11,000 metres to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of any ocean on the planet. He was accompanied by Jacques Piccard.
