What happens when IS steals your photo?

Boston Calling

Available for over a year

It’s well known that the so-called Islamic State is skilled at using slick production values in its propaganda. Perhaps unsurprisingly, though, adhering to copyright law is not its strong suit. Brian McCarty is a photographer based in Los Angeles, and he recently discovered that one of his photos was used in IS materials. The image in question originated from a photo essay of his called ‘WAR-TOYS’. Image: Photographer Brian McCarty's original photo (left) and the image repurposed for IS propaganda (right).
