The wife of a British General who is being treated in a mental health hospital has said the Ministry of Defence "don't want to admit" that an anti-malarial drug used by military personnel has dangerous side-effects. Ellen Duncan believes Mefloquine, or Lariam, contributed to her husband's psychiatric condition and she is accusing the government of ignoring medical evidence about it. "A sizeable minority will be affected...and it may permanently damage their brain," Mrs Duncan said. The government says it only prescribes Lariam after an individual risk assessment. Its manufacturers Roche say the benefits of Lariam outweigh its risks.
