Being the parent of a lively toddler can be challenging enough at the best of times, but when you’re coming to terms with a diagnosis which could have profound implications for future family life, it’s tough. For many families, the Birstall Playgroup for children with special needs provides a safe space for toddlers and pre-school children to play whilst parents and carers take some time out. Funding from Children in Need has played a vital role in ensuring the playgroup can run – it pays for a playgroup leader and assistant leader who are specialists in caring for youngsters with special needs and they have inspired an army of volunteers who help with day to day running. Jo Hayward popped along to a recent session in Birstall.
