Nato chief: Air strikes alone will not defeat IS

World at One

Available for over a year

Welcoming British military strikes in Syria the Nato secretary general said that an air campaign alone would not be enough to defeat the group calling itself Islamic State. In his first British interview since David Cameron secured MPs approval for air strikes, Jens Stoltenberg ruled out Nato ground forces taking part in the conflict. Speaking to Shaun Ley, he said he believed that most of Russia's air strikes in Syria had not targetted IS and defended Turkey's decision to shoot down a Russian jet saying "every nation has the right to defend its territory".
