The late New Zealand rugby legend Jonah Lomu was effectively broke when he died last month, it has been revealed. Close friends have now set up a trust fund for the player's two sons - not at the request of the family. It has been launched by the New Zealand Rugby Players Association and their CEO Rob Nichol explained how Lomu had ended up penniless as a result of his generosity: "He was a pretty private character and always had this thing about wanting to help others or do things for everyone else and he pretty much never said 'no' in some senses," he said. Rob described Lomu as a "rugby phenomenon", adding: "He did so much for so many people associated with the game - we cannot sit idle and let his family struggle."
