Charles Duke, an astronaut on the Apollo 16 lunar mission, describes lift off. From an initial slow speed, with a feeling similar to a lift in a tall building, the rocket accelerated till it was 'shaking from side to side' as they reached an altitude of 35 miles and a travelling speed of 8,000 miles an hour.
