Sounds of the year: aquatic insects

Broadcasting House

Available for over a year

Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson - best known for his work with David Attenborough - picks his highlights from a year of recording all over the world. The lesser water boatmen, an aquatic insect found in Exhibition Park Lake in Newcastle, is the loudest animal for its body size in the world. He tells Paddy O'Connell that the intertebrate makes the sound - the equivalent of standing next to a jumbo jet - by rubbing its penis against its abdomen.
