Hennessey: Afghan army need more resources to fight Taliban

World at One

Available for over a year

Responding to the police battle with the Taliban in the Afghan town of Sangin, former soldier Patrick Hennessey has said the Afghan army needs more resources. "The idea that the Afghan security forces, as we left them in 2014, can do everything they need to do on their own is clearly incorrect, " said Hennessey, who previously fought in Sangin. "They need some sort of targeted support, probably in specialist capabilities that they don't currently have. " They are getting some help, he said. "But the problem is too big at the moment", he added.
