NASA delays the study of geology on Mars

InSight is a spacecraft which has been designed to explore geology on Mars. It was due to blast off in March and start its job 6 months later. But the US space agency NASA has suspended the launch of the mission because of a faulty seismometer. So what is this instrument for?
