Did Shakespeare give older women raw deal?

The World Tonight

Available for over a year

Think Shakespearean women and you think of characters like Juliet and Viola but a new play is bringing one of the bard's older female characters out of the shadows. Margaret of Anjou - Queen Consort to Henry VI appears in Shakespeare's three plays about the king. Now Elizabeth Schafer, professor of drama and theatre studies at Royal Holloway, has decided the ageing queen needs a bigger role, and has created her own play for her, using Shakespeare's words. She told Ritula Shah why Margaret had inspired her to write the play. (Image: Margaret of Anjou. Credit: Getty Images)
