On Stage '81, the first Toronto theatre festival is the biggest ever held in North America, with performances in 72 venues and on the city streets. It is about showing through theatrical forms that Canada has a soul, says festival director Shane Jaffay. Highlights include Maggie and Pierre, a one-woman satire by Linda Griffiths about former Prime Minister Trudeau and his wife, The Kites by W.O. Mitchell, and Tamara, a peripatetic play by John Krizanc about the painter Tamara de Lempicka. Presenter: Jim Hiley.
