Life Under Colonialism

The Story of Africa

Available for over a year

Episode twenty - African life under European rule. Nowhere in Africa did the colonial system last more than 100 years. But it left its mark and even after independence, many colonial attitudes remained. So what was it like for the people who lived through it? And does a shadow still remain in Africa? "A European lady came to our office and I was the only person there, and she opened the door and asked me if there was someone in the office. I said casually that I thought there was something wrong with her eyes. She took it very seriously, letters were sent to the mayor and I was asked to apologise." Tom Mboya, later a senior minister in Kenya Presented by Hugh Quarshie.
