The Irish president, Michael D Higgins, has laid a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin - as events take place to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising. The rebellion in 1916 failed to overthrow British rule - but is seen as an important moment in the path to the creation of an independent Ireland six years later. Our correspondent, Peter Hunt, is in Dublin and sent this report on the day's events: (Photo: Irish president laying a wreath. Credit: Press Association)
