Jessica talks about what it’s like to be deliberately infected with hookworms in the name of science. She has volunteered to do this not for herself, as she is unlikely to ever pick up the parasitic worms, but to help people in the developing world. Hookworms can cause severe disability and anaemia, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and parts of the Americas, and infection with the worms means that vaccines aren’t as effective as they should be.
