Platelets play a vital role in blood clotting, essential if someone needs a blood transfusion. At the moment, doctors are totally dependent on blood donations, but now scientists in Britain say they've made a major breakthrough in creating blood platelets in a laboratory. Dr Cedric Ghevaert, a consultant haemotologist from Cambridge University, was involved in the research.
