Jailed for a murder that never happened

Outlook

Available for over a year

In 1981, Outlook Inspirations nominee Edward Mpagi and his cousin were arrested for allegedly robbing their neighbour’s house in their Ugandan village. At first they thought they would be found innocent and released shortly, but it wasn’t until they appeared in court that they discovered they had been charged with murder. Edward spent 20 years on death row in dangerous conditions, until the authorities discovered his supposed victim was still alive. Edward now campaigns to abolish the death penalty in Uganda.
