In Uganda, deaf children are often called ‘kasira’, meaning mentally deficient or useless. Although there are schools for deaf children many parents simply don't send them, preferring to prioritise their hearing children. Outlook Inspirations nominee Nasser Ssenyondo lost his hearing to meningitis when he was ten, and the isolation he experienced in his hometown inspired him to help all deaf children get an education.
