The Ark of Taste: Cromer Crabs

The Food Programme

Available for over a year

Fisherman John Davis tells the story of a golden brown crab that he has been catching all his life from the chalky sea beds just off Cromer's coast in North Norfolk. The crab has been caught here for centuries, and by the middle of the 19th century the fishery was thriving. New technology arrived with the coal carriers from Yorkshire and hundreds made their living from the Cromer crab. Today, John fishes in a similar way and the crabs are still in abundance, but the fishermen are now few and far between. He hopes that the next generation will continue to catch this wonderful local seafood.
