Technology helps to keep the sickest patients alive in hospital. But the alarms found in intensive care units can make as much noise as in a busy restaurant – loud enough to disturb both staff and patients. Researchers say alternatives to alarms can help to quieten things down – such as placing alarms in a central location or using flashing lights instead of sounds. In this week’s Health Check Claudia Hammond hears about efforts to reduce the stress of noise in hospitals.
