"Rio is broke"

In the Balance

Available for over a year

Rio de Janeiro has been driven to near bankruptcy in the run-up to the 2016 Olympic Games, with at least one hospital closing its doors and many public servants not paid on time. The financial crisis, caused in large part by a deep recession in Brazil, has led to angry protests in Rio against the cost of the event. Brazilian-born journalist Juliana Barbassa tells Ed Butler most residents think the cash could have been better spent. (Picture: Police and firemen in Rio de Janeiro protest at delays to their pay.
