The American firm Monsanto, which makes the seeds for many genetically modified crops, is being bought by the German chemicals giant Bayer, for $66bn. If regulators allow the marriage to go ahead, the combined company will supply a quarter of the world's seeds and pesticides. Alex Ritson finds out more from Sven Geigold, a German member of the European Parliament for the Green group, who has launched a campaign to block the deal, and Tom Philpot, agriculture correspondent with the US news organisation Mother Jones.
