The Ark of Taste: Kam Sweet Rice

The Food Programme

Available for over a year

Kam sweet rice is a fragrant variety grown on small scale by the Dong minority in the Guizhou province of China. It is thought to be one of the oldest breeds of conventional rice, and is exchanged at Dong ceremonies and worship. But this low-yielding variety is slowly disappearing. Professor Lang Ying explains how its survival lies in the continued passing on of seeds and farming practices from village to village.
