Police Sgt: phone driving offences are ‘more spontaneous’

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Police in England and Wales have launched their biggest crackdown ever on drivers using mobile phones behind the wheel. Gwent Police stepped up its patrols a week ago, but Sergeant Leighton Healan says drivers who are caught using their phones should still be treated differently to those who are caught drink-driving. He told Nicky Campbell: “Drink driving is a personal choice. You go out that evening, you’ve got the car with you and you have that drink. With a mobile phone it’s less pre-planned. It’s spontaneous. The phone rings and you decide to pick it up and answer it.” This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Monday 14 November 2016.
