The American cardinal who defied Mike Pence

World Update

Available for over a year

Pope Francis clashed with US President-elect Donald Trump during the election campaign, questioning Mr. Trump's Christianity because he "thinks only about building walls, not bridges." Now the Pope has appointed as a new American cardinal a bishop who defied vice-president-elect Mike Pence, who as governor of Indiana told the Catholic Church not to welcome Syrian refugees. Dan Damon spoke to the new cardinal, Joseph Tobin, who has just left Indianapolis for his new post in Newark, New Jersey. He told Dan why he chose to defy Mike Pence.
