When Kaye was 19 she became pregnant. She was sent away to Holland to stay with family friends and have the baby in secret and adopted in order to avoid the social stigma of having a child outside of marriage. Even though she tried to get on with her life - meeting Jo's dad, getting married, having a family - she found it harder and harder to keep the secret of the baby boy she'd given up for adoption and decided to retrace him. After growing suspicious about a trip her mum was planning to Holland, Jo confronted Kaye and discovered she had an older brother.
